Assignment #9 Final Project-motion

These first two pictures explain my entire project. They were taken at the same location at different times while it was raining. This first image is a 15 second long exposure of a large puddle in my backyard. Water is being pored into the puddle because of a gutter and it is also raining. This is one way I showed motion in this project through long exposures. About this individual picture I think its very interesting. Motion is not obvious in the shot but you can tell it is there. I like the banks on the side of the picture. Had I only showed the water like in the picture below it would not have been as interesting.



This is the second way I showed motion in this project. Still photos show motion because there is potential to do something. Something had to happen or MOVE after the image was taken. In this photo the viewer knows that the rain drops have to stir the water making it a still motion picture. I wish I had shone the banks in this picture instead of the majority being water. I still think the picture is nice and it fulfills its purpose of explaining my project.



This image took the most effort to shoot. I probably shot at least 100 pictures of this rock alone while getting this picture. The first difficulty was timing when I took the picture. I had to throw or drip water on this rock then take the picture at 1/1600 of a second. Sometimes I would not get any water in the shot. When I finally did get some good shots I liked I realized I did not focus on the rock properly and it ruined my entire set of images. I had to go back, focus very carefully then time my picture again. I finally got this one that I liked. This is one of my strongest still motion images and Im glad I finally got one of these that I liked.



I should have used this picture for get on your belly. This shot is leaning towards the cliche side of soccer photos but I could not leave it out of my project. I like the way my sisters foot is positioned after the shot and the ball looks good in its spot also. This picture just turned out good I like only having my sisters waist in the shot the only thing that is annoying is the background. The art building and the school garden get in the background. I was shooting on this field for two hours and I have learned that there really are not any good backgrounds on this soccer field. It does not swipe your attention all that much but I still wish it wasn't there.



This image is of thatcher. It is one of my still motion shots and it was scary to take it. I was afraid that thatcher would somehow hit me with the ball because I was right below him. I took some of the same pictures but this time I took them from the side and the picture was not near as good. Get on your belly really made me think about point of view even though I did not like the assignment much. All throughout this final project there are aspects of our previous assignments especially get on your belly.



Here is probably one of my least favorites from this assignment. It was tricky to stir the pasta sauce with the spoon long in the same place long enough so that the spoon would show up. The reason I don't like this picture much is because it is so uninteresting. The other pictures have some point of view or some story that make it interesting but this picture is quite bland to me. Were I to shoot this assignment again I would take this picture from a different angle or find one to replace it.



This image was tricky to time because I had to get the ball in the right position in the image. I only had to take it once though talk about good luck. I like this image mainly because I am behind the goal. Had I been in the goal (which I was for many of my images) the picture would not have looked so good. The net in the background gives you a sense of protection that my sister must keep the ball from touching that net. This is a strong still motion shot meaning it has the potential to move showing motion.



I like this image because of the focus. It made my final project because of the focus and I am very satisfied with it. From a perfectionists point of view I wish the water had been moving a bit faster especially since I am trying to show motion. It does not turn into the white fuzzy color that water turns to in long exposures. It was 15 seconds like my other exposures but the water was very slow. Despite this it still shows motion which is what I wanted.



I really like this image. To take it used a tripod and set a 15 second long exposure and then walked infront of the camera. That was the easy part. The difficult part was walking at just the right speed so that I showed motion in my image instead of a spooky see through ghost. This was much more difficult than I thought it would be and I had to practice this for at least 25 minutes before I got the hang of it. I put the house in the background because it made the picture more interesting. A story can be told from this image because the house in there. The other long exposures I took like this were not quite as interesting because I just had the side walk and road in the background. I love how the clouds look in top right hand corner especially. They make the picture look so much better in my opinion than if it would have just been clear skies. They creep over the mountains in a certain way that I really like. This goes on my favorite list for the pictures I have taken this year.



This is a gutter in my backyard pouring out water during a rain storm. Similar to one of the pictures above I really like the focus in this picture. The grass with the water drops once again served me well in my image. I like the water streaming down from the gutter and even better I like how it is off to the side. The picture would not be the same had it been in the middle. It would have given us a sure subject yes but I like it off to the side much better. I only had one true focusing problem this project and focusing is one of the things I struggle with. In this image and one of the ones above the focus turned out great.



This shot falls in between the lines of a long exposure and a still motion image. It has aspects of both. Capturing the water as it goes away from my foot is still motion but the picture itself being blurry starts to tilt towards a long exposure. I have thought about a picture like this before I started photo. I wanted to capture the split second that water splits apart when pressure is put onto it. I wish I would have shot this when it was much lighter because then I could have avoided the blurry factor. But in this image and with my project the blurry factor does not really matter. I still show motion in the image wether it is still or blurry and I show motion even more so with it being blurry. This was not a prize winner for me in this project but I still enjoy the picture.



This is a classic car long exposure shot. I got this picture idea from my brother and from what I know it is a commonly shot picture. I tried to frame it just right so that I did not have a distracting background. There were street lights on both sides of the road that I had to avoid and also a mail box. I could not avoid having the house in their but i am perfectly ok with it being there. It does not take that much attention away from the main subject. I also did not crop the house thank goodness we talked about that a couple of class periods earlier. Had it been cropped I think it would have served as a greater distraction. Nothing much other than the head lights showed up as the care came around the curve. This was fine with me because the image still showed motion like I wanted it to.

This was my favorite project by far. I enjoyed shooting this project more than the others partly because I had more freedom in choosing what to shoot. I was not as restricted which made the shooting alot easier for me. Overall this was my most succesful project and it was the most fun.

Assignment #9 proposal

For my final project I want to center around motion. Motion can be conveyed in multiple ways. One way is a blurred image. An image with a blurred subject will always shout motion. Another way is an action in a still image. Actions that are happening at the moment can express motion even if it is a still image.
Possible Ideas: Car blurred, sports action(s), typing, animals. Many other things will come as I start shooting, after all motion is everywhere. I have always enjoyed long exposures. My brother is a photographer and his long exposure are my favorites of his pictures. This will be very helpful for shooting motion. I have always like rivers, clouds and cars in long exposure images. Wind can also create great motion filled long exposures. Long exposures are tricky with the cameras we are using but I think i am up to the challenge.

Assignment #8-reshoot

Last time I shot this assignment I did not take many vertical pictures. All of my pictures were horizontal and I don't think I fulfilled the purpose of this assignment. I did not get the point of views that I wanted. This is the first set of bracketed images that I shot for this assignment. The picture gives the viewer a vertical point of view instead of the average get on your belly shot.



This picture also shows a vertical point of view. I put the rake over the camera to get the feeling of being trapped. The rake looks like prison bars keeping you from the trees. Overall the picture accomplishes what I wanted and that was to get a vertical as well as horizontal point of view.



This was the picture of my dog take 2. On the previous on your belly assignment I shot my dogs paws and it turned out to be a really good picture. I wanted to do the same thing but get my dogs head in it this time. The picture focused on my dogs neck because I got so close but I think it turned out well. I wish I had not cropped his head so much.



There is a weird tree in my front yard. It has a bunch of small strings hanging off of the branches. I got right under it to get a vertical point of view. The strings did not show up very prominently but I think the picture turned out well.



I think this should be one of the shots for my high key assignment. Reshooting get on your belly made me see things I could have done for my other assignments. In my last get on your belly assignment I had a similar picture of a fan but I had the fan moving so in this won I left the fan still. I tried to improve some of the pictures I took during the 1st get on your belly.



If I were to name this picture it would be "The last thing the leaf see's" This picture did not get as vertical as my others but I still included it. I enjoy the way the grass is coming through the rake. I know, this picture is darker that I would like it but I shot it on a cloudy day and I did not want to make it look fake.



This one is one of my favorites for this assignment. I took this shot underneath a sofa in my living room. My idea was to take a picture like the one Na shot of the library shelves. As I was doing that I noticed this shot. I had to clean up some things in the background before I took the picture. I was worried that I had to much of the floor in this shot but I think it was a good balance.



This is also one of my favorites for this assignment. These candal holders are hanging off of my wall and the light is also. This picture gets very vertical and I think the very black cases go well with the white light and ceiling. My only frustration with this shot was that I had to edit out a black spot from another candal thing. I was able to get it out of the picture but I could have noticed the thing while I was shooting.



I like the angle that this picture was shot at. The side walk I am on is slanted which bugged me at first but when I looked at the shot in light room in grew on me. Part of me wanted a long exposure but it was still to light outside even with the clouds. The blurred car still turned out well.



This picture was hard to judge how much blacks I could put in. The sky was blown out if I increased the exposure a little bit so I did not raise the exposure to much. My goal was to add enough blacks so that the contrast was good but also so that you could still see detail on the leaves. This is a very simple picture but I like how much sky there is corresponding to how many leaves there are. I also think that having only one type of tree in the picture looks better than if I jumbled it all up.

In this assignment I learned how to get vertical as well as horizontal. I was trying to think of the Simpsons as I shot this. I wanted to get different angles instead of your typical on your belly shot. I am not the most artistic person and photo is very difficult for me but it has made me see and think about things that I never did before. And even though Im not shooting I can see certain situations that would make good pictures.

Assignment #7-Numbers

I had a multiplication picture already but I did two things differently in this one. I added tooth pics as the multiplication symbol instead of the middle of the table. I also did not use symbols in the other picture. In this picture the fruit loops form the literal numbers 8 and 9. In the other shot I used the quantity of something to show 2 x 3.



This is the column that my mail box is on. I love the old look of the numbers. The nails as well as the metal look old and rusty adding to the quality of the picture. I did not add all of both numbers to make the picture look better but I am starting to wish that I had shot all of the number to get the whole picture. The shadows that came from adding blacks look really good creeping around the numbers.



You can look at this picture in two ways. One ways is that the space around the crums literally is a zero. The second way is that their is NONE left. The cookie or circular object was eaten and there is zero of it left. I choose this one over another similar picture where the crumbs just mad it look like there was nothing left. I chose this one because it gives you the two ways of representing zero.



I like how the back of this car is some what dirty. It gets the viewer to notice the focus and look farther into the picture. It was hard to focus without having the c in the picture but the c only adds to the quality of the picture in my opinion. I also used the spot remover tool in this image and it worked so well I can hardly tell where I took it away. Try to find the edited spot I dare you.

This picture was hard to edit after I took it. I wanted more blacks in the picture but the stone would not change with the vine so the vine became very very dark very very quick. Taking the picture was frustrating because my dog would keep stepping in front of the tripod and ruining the ten. I finally composed it and I think it turned out well.



This picture was a fun one. Just as I was finishing dinner I saw the oil separate from the vinegar. I mixed around the remnants of my plate added some more vinegar and then spelled 70 with the oil. After adding some blacks I think that this image turned out great. The oil on top of the vinegar looks really good. I only wish that it was easier to tell that the number is a 70.



This picture is very well focused. The reason I like it so much is because of the detail you get from the mud. It is like sand, it has a ton of tiny pebbles that make up the mud. If you zoom in you can see the water going through it. The second reason I like it is the water filling up the 2. It has a tiny reflection in it that makes the overall picture look good. I added more blacks to this image which overall did not change the picture other than inside the number.



This is one of my favorites from this assignment. All of the snow was melting forming a puddle in my backyard. I got food coloring and did and abstract 14. It turned out really we. The food coloring started as little dots but they come together to make the 14. It was hard for me to judge how much black to put into this picture. It was extremely flat when I took it. I think that the picture could use more black but if I added any more black the picture was not natural. If I added any more I would have been tinkering with it to much.



I like this picture because you can obviously tell that they are pennies and a nickel. If that was not clear the picture would not work. The focus is good and I think after I added some black the picture is so much better. Before it was very flat and know the blacks go well with the coins. If you look at the picture diagonally the black in the bottom left corner move into light in the top right corner. It shifts from blacks to whites and that adds a special zing to the picture.



I was not sure about this picture at first. I took it and liked the focus/composure but I was not sure if it was clear enough. It ended up one of my best pictures of this assignment. The crease where two tables come together served as a good multiplication symbol. It was funny/hard to shoot this picture because my nephew wanted the candy that I was using in my picture.

This assignment was very very frustrating at first. I hated it and was having a hard time coming up with ideas. After shooting ten pictures in one hour and a half I decided just to quit for the night. After Mr. Slade told me to keep it simple the assignment was so much easier. I shot all of my good ideas and then just filled in the other numbers I had not shot yet. In the end this assignment turned out to be my favorite.

Assignment #6 - Portraits

This is my nephew Gavin. He is the same nephew that wiped his hands all over my lens. I took alot of pictures of him and this was my favorite. I told him to pretend to be asleep and he had a hard time not laughing. That is why he has a little smirk on his face. I had a hard time choosing between this pic and another one of him eating a donut. I choose this one because it says more about my nephew as a joking, teasing, funny kid.



This is my sister Kaile. She is crazy fast at typing and to show it I tried to blur her hands. It did not work perfectly but I like the way I framed the picture. It looks better from above than it would from the side. From the side there were things in the background that take away your attention from my sister. From above there is nothing else to focus on other than my sister, her note book, and the key pad. This picture was hard to take because I had to stand on the edge of my kitchen counter to get the aerial shot. My feet kept popping into the picture and when I moved them I almost fell off the counter.



This is my brother eating my moms split pea soup. I used the white wall behind him for many of my pictures. It is perfect because it is by the biggest window in my house. I like his expression. It is not totally candid because I told him to stop what he was doing and freeze.



This picture is totally candid. I was taking pictures of my sister and I started a fake argument. Her pets always die as soon as she gets them. I bought her a pet turtle for christmas one year and it died soon after. I started talking to her about how it was her fault and started to take pictures. If you flip through the pictures you can tell that she was talking or arguing. This picture is her "Ready to Defend Myself" picture. When we tease her this is the face she gets.



This picture came before I started the argument. My sister always reads. She will not put a book down if she gets into it. I always tease her about her books wether they are about dragons, whitches, or some other mythical creature. I put the book down to show her readiness to defend herself.



This photo is candid and I really like it. I started asking my brother questions about what he brought home from his trip to California. He went into and explanation and I was able to get the shot. I really like that he is blurry in this picture. And his expression could tell one hundred stories. This one is just an explanation.



This is Kaile again reading her "amazon" kindle thing. Her expression looks like she is pondering or thinking about something complex. It was hard to keep the windows out of this picture. If I would have taken the picture a bit higher I would have alot of light causing a distracting background. This picture turned out well in the end.



This is probably my favorite for this assignment. I love how blurry it is especially her hands. Even though she is not in focus the picture tells alot about her. I had my camera on a tripod for this picture and it was hard to keep the legs out of the picture. The picture tells me that my mom does alot for my family as expressed by the laundry.



The hardest part of this assignment was shooting myself. However I think that the portraits of myself turned out really well. I had my dad hold a towel behind me to try and get a good background. I never listen to music by myself. I never really have and so I found huge headphones. I send about 5 texts messages in 1 week and the messages are usually to my mom or dad about where to pick me up. Thats why I showed myself texting. We did not end up taking the picture from the front but the computer had face book on it. I do not have a face book account and I think people get to obsessed with it.



This picture rivals the one of my mom. My sister has always loved art (and photo) but she never took any classes because she wanted to shoot and draw what she wanted instead of an assignment. I really like how close I got and the focus is very very good. The pencil adds to the picture and gets the viewer thinking about the photo.

This assignment was the most difficult. Portraits are not easy especially if you procrastinate taking them to get a feel for the assignment. I think I did very well in the end and I can say that I worked harder on this assignment than any of my others. I am not the best photographer but I am improving and I believe that I am a much better one now than at the start of the year.

Assignment #5 Get on your belly

In this assignment I took alot of photos in my back yard. This is one the pictures that I was trying to get a high point of view from the trees in the background. It did not work out as good as I wanted. I like the focus and quality of the picture but I did not get the high point of view I wanted. I also think this photo could use a bit more contrast in the leaves but I still enjoy the picture.



This picture was difficult to get. I had to get on my back on top of a table as well as adjust my tripod to get directly under the fan. I turned off all of the lights except this fan to get the picture. I wanted a long exposure of the fan going in circles but this turned out to be more difficult that it sounded. After trying several long exposures of 15, 13, 10, 8, and 6 seconds the fan would not show up as well as I wanted to. I like how bright the light is in contrast with the dark ceiling. This picture leaves the viewer a little bit confused which is something I like about it. In other words it is a mysterious picture.



I really like this picture. I wish I would have used this for the critique instead of my close up moss picture. I lifted leaves up so that you could see under the brush. It gives the picture a mysterious feeling that there is more than meets the eye. I increased the contrast a tiny bit but had to stop because it became to dark underneath the leaves. This is one of my favorite pictures of this assignment.



The pine tree in the back of this picture is our Christmas tree. We will eventually use it as fire wood but it served as a good subject for this picture. I bracketed this picture in color because I was taking pictures of birds before hand. I deleted them all and shot them again in black and white. I then remembered that I could have just switched them to grayscale on my computer. I like how the crack in the ground filled with leaves looks like a pathway leading up to the pine tree. This is also one of my favorites for this assignment.



This is my favorite picture of this assignment. It was hard to take because my chocolate lab would not stay still. I also shot this picture in color but did not delete it because I remembered that I could switch it to grayscale on the computer. I really like how full the image is. I did not show any more of the dog other than what was necessary. This images really is the definition of getting low. You can tell that the perspective is as low as it can be.



In this picture I tried to get all of the detail on the rock and moss. I achieved that but I am still not satisfied with the point of view of the image. I wish I could have taken this image much more vertically than a mix between horizontal and vertical. The photo is also very "empty" their is no subject making the image interesting.



Before I took this image I was cleaning up in my neighbors backyard. That is where I got the idea the leaves. This picture is very simple but it does give and interesting perspective. The leaves continue to build up until they are out of the picture. This gives you a vertical perspective even though the picture was not framed vertically.



I love the detail of this picture. The detail you get from the moss surrounding the rock is awesome but this picture was taken straight ahead and does not give much perspective at all. It was the second picture I took for this assignment and it was interesting to see how my perspectives changed as the assignment continued.

Overall I was disappointed with how this assignment turned out. I did not fulfill the assignment the way I wanted to. I shot alot of pictures with a horizontal perspective but hardly any with a vertical perspective. If I shot this assignment again I would try to get my images to have a clear and obvious perspective. My printing and focus went well but I was lacking the creativity that is necessary to be a good photographer. That is what I need to work on in assignments to come.
